Sounds like...

The second most horrible sound in the world is Tricky, post yum cha (or dim sum), shrieking from his cot as he refuses to take his nap. He is the Screaming Tomato but with added dumpling hysteria.

The first most horrible sound in the world is the screaming, as noted above, followed by a sudden thump and then silence.

Somewhere further down the list is the sound of his mother racing up a flight of stairs muttering ‘oh my god’, closely followed by sound of same mother blubbering on the floor as she hugs her slightly surprised but undamaged toddler.

And somewhere near there is the sound of his father who was on the computer in the next room saying pathetically “Oh I thought he was downstairs with you…”

OMG, he managed to get out of his crib??? Yikes! I think the silence after the thump would have stopped my hear too!

As my little darling likes to say: uh oh. Unless you are comfortable with a roaming Tricky, may I suggest a minor investment in a crib tent? Baby M was not at all pleased with it at first, but she has cheerfully accepted it. I feel so much better knowing she won't be bashing her head or breaking her neck in middle of the night.

Holy crap OG! What a fright... I hate that silence...

If he makes a habit of it, make sure he has socks on, that stopped my nephew from using his toes to grip the cot rails and scale the sides like a wee monkey.

Awful story, can't imagine how scared you must have been, but lol at some of the prevention suggestions!

Poor Tricky! Poor Mama!

As for the dads? Gotta love 'em, but sometimes...!

Sounds like Tricky is living up to his name.

Maybe he's ready for a "big-boy bed"?

Thanks for these suggestions. i like the socks idea but i think he would just drag them off. last night i caught him trying to scale the side of the cot. He was perfectly calm and coldly singleminded about the whole thing. I'm not sure about the crib top, the one we have is an old wooden one, not standard size and also i tend to think he's actually growing out of it now. I think Cat is right it's time for the big boy bed.
